In order to better understand the new changing trend and activity scope of the Yangtze finless porpoise population in Nanjing after ten years of fishing ban, and to stimulate the enthusiasm of the whole people for scientific observation of the finless porpoise, on the 18th of this month, more than 200 "synchronous observation investigators of the finless porpoise" participated in the synchronous investigation of the Yangtze finless porpoise in Nanjing as citizen scientists. This activity is also the one with the largest number of points and the largest number of participants in the three years since the "synchronous observation" was launched.

The activity report shows that finless porpoises are active in Jiang Xinzhou, Xinjizhou and Yuzui Wetland Park. Among them, Sanshanji and Wumadu are the first discovery records of "synchronous observation" over the years, and Wumadu is the only one set up outside Nanjing Yangtze finless porpoise provincial nature reserve. "This shows that the scope of finless porpoises’ activities is getting wider and wider, and the improvement of the ecological environment allows finless porpoises to swim freely in the Nanjing section of the Yangtze River." Jiang Meng, executive vice president and secretary general of Nanjing finless porpoise aquatic biological protection association, said.

Autumn and winter are the best viewing seasons for the Yangtze finless porpoise, and the Yangtze finless porpoise, which frequently emerges, is also a witness of good ecology. From the observation results, it can be seen that the finless porpoise is most active from 8: 00 to 9: 00 and from 16: 30 to 17: 00 before sunset, with more sightings in the morning than in the afternoon. From the observation point of view, the Yangtze River Smile Station, located on the riverside coastline of Gulou, is the point with the highest frequency of seeing finless porpoises among the 13 observation points in Nanjing, and only 72 finless porpoises were seen on November 18th.

Since the implementation of the Great Protection Strategy of the Yangtze River and the Ten-year Fishing Ban Plan, Nanjing’s biodiversity has been continuously enriched. According to Jiang Meng, in addition to the Yangtze finless porpoise, more than 50 species of wild animals were recorded in many wetlands along the Yangtze River, including two national first-class protected animals, the Oriental stork and the blue-headed diving duck, eight national second-class protected animals, such as the white goose, baikal teal, osprey and black kite, and many species such as Siberian gull were recorded in the "synchronous observation" activity for the first time.

The first set of postage postcards of Yangtze finless porpoise in the whole province jointly created by China Post Nanjing Branch and Nanjing finless porpoise aquatic biological protection association was released at the event site. There are 10 postcards with unique ecological characteristics of the Yangtze River, which show the different forms and characteristics of the Yangtze finless porpoise respectively, and place people’s care and blessings on the finless porpoise.
