Land tank falls to the altar? Volvo XC90 rear-end collision
[Autohome Car Collection] Last weekend, a very tragic traffic accident occurred at Beijing Daxing Airport Expressway. (| |), known as a land tank, rear-ended a stationary trailer truck at an extremely high speed. At present, the official traffic accident appraisal and Volvo officials have not given relevant information, but looking at the tragic "scene", I still want to talk to you about driving safety issues.

○ Active emergency braking is neither mysterious nor omnipotent
Active emergency braking, also known as AEB or automatic braking, was introduced by Volvo in 2010 as part of its famous City Safety system.
The camera is similar to the human eye, although it can easily detect obstacles, it will be affected by light, rain, fog, and dust. Millimeter-wave radar is not affected by the environment, but it is biased towards moving objects in object recognition. When recognizing stationary objects, there will be false triggers (such as a gantry on the road), so the final control system usually trusts the camera’s judgment more when stationary, and filters out millimeter-wave radar data.
These problems will cause the active emergency braking system to be limited in complex situations, and the system may not work, so each car company will make a clear introduction in the manual, and emphasize that this is an auxiliary feature, not an absolute function.
For these two issues, you still have to wait for the official announcement, and you can’t get a scientific argument just by watching the video. What I’m talking about below are just some of the possibilities of accidents, mainly to remind everyone to drive safely.
1) About the Volvo XC90
From the video, we don’t see any signs of the Volvo XC90 braking (the video is not clear enough either). Then it is certain that the driver may have been distracted or not paying attention to the road aheadAt the same time, the active emergency braking is turned off (City Safety allows manual shutdown) or the system does not recognize it.
The second reason may be that the camera or the front windshield is too dirty or there are foreign objects, which affects the judgment of the camera. However, this possibility is not very high, because the system will judge the camera condition when it starts. If there is something dirty blocking, the system will send an alarm when the system starts. The same is true for the millimeter wave radar located behind the windshield. If there is an obstruction, the system will alarm when it starts.
The camera failed to capture the large truck in time due to the curve, or because the large truck compartment was too high, the system did not enter the relevant learning model, so the obstacles were filtered out, and eventually the collision occurred.
As for the lighting problem mentioned by some netizens, from the video, the entire car is in a smooth state, which does not cause too much interference to the camera, and the possibility of system failure due to light is not high.
Because we don’t have more details on the scene yet, the problems with the active emergency braking system based on the video are the above possibilities. In addition, Volvo’s active emergency braking function is only effective for stationary vehicles within a relative speed of 70km/h, that is, when the speed exceeds 70km/h, even if the system detects obstacles ahead and applies braking, a collision may still occur.
And for Volvo’s previously advertised function of steering assist in the event of a collision hazard, it was not triggered in this accident. The specific reason is unknown, but theoretically, this function would be activated within the range of 60-140 km/h.
2) About large trucks
First of all, we know that large trucks must be equipped with rear guards. We can’t determine whether the truck is equipped with guards from the video, but from the pictures of the Volvo XC90 collision, it is obvious that the truck is most likely not equipped. The main reason is that the front and front engine covers of the XC90 are not deformed as they should be in a frontal collision, so it is obvious that large trucks need to bear some responsibility (GB 11567-2017 requires trucks to be equipped with relevant protective devices).
Second, the truck was parked on the main road, and no obvious warning triangle was found in the video. From the perspective of road safety law, it was also illegal parking.
Although intelligence is accelerating, it still needs to be used with caution
We don’t know whether the Volvo XC90 used the driver assistance system in this accident, but even if the driver assistance is used, the system still has a certain chance of failing to recognize the target, which is the limitation of the current driver assistance system. The current driver assistance system includes active emergency braking or is mainly based on the driver. Even if there is a collision when these functions are turned on, the responsibility still lies with the driver. It cannot completely replace the driver to make decisions. Therefore, drivers and friends still need to use these functions safely and cautiously.
In addition, more details about this accident are still unclear, and we will continue to pay attention to the official news. Finally, the Spring Festival is approaching. I hope that netizens in your home can sound the alarm, drive safely, go out happily, and arrive home safely. (Photo/Text Autohome Leng Xiaoyang)
