Solving the problem of communication antenna wins time for transmitting military information

In June 1950, the Korean War broke out. Soon after, Chen Jingxiong graduated from the Institute of Telecommunications of Shanghai Jiaotong University. Not long after he started working, he received the task of studying the military communication antenna.

Communication is the lifeline of the army. In the National Day movie The Battle at Lake Changjin, when the volunteers to resist U.S. aggression and aid Korea face a crisis, the first thing to protect is the radio communication equipment and compilers.

At that time, when volunteers used walkie-talkies in tunnels to report the battlefield situation, they found that the distance between the antenna and the ground would affect the signal effect. However, soldiers do not understand the principle, and can only adjust the antenna direction by experience, sometimes delaying the transmission of battlefield information.

After repeated calculations and analysis, Chen Jingxiong realized that this phenomenon is mainly the problem of ground wave propagation. After that, he established the electromagnetic radiation model of short-wave antenna in his research, which explained this problem theoretically.

In order to prove the accuracy of the inference in the electromagnetic radiation model, he led the team members to carry dozens of kilograms of communication equipment and conduct repeated experiments in the simulated tunnel.

Everything comes to him who waits, and the experiment is successful! Chen Jingxiong’s research results "blossom and bear fruit" on the battlefield, which won valuable time for the volunteers to beat the enemy.

Independent innovation repeatedly tests Dongfeng’s "long eyes" red flag "key to solution"

On November 16th, 1957, the Central Committee approved the establishment of the Second Branch of the Fifth Academy of the Ministry of National Defense, and Chen Jingxiong began to engage in space research in the Second Branch, becoming the first generation of astronauts in China.

Just entering the space journey, he ushered in a major project to study the "1059" missile antenna. "1059" is the first generation domestic missile based on the Soviet "P-2" missile combined with the domestic reality, which is later known as "Dongfeng No.1". The missile antenna developed by Chen Jingxiong is the "eye" and "baton" of the missile.

The drawings provided by the Soviet side are incomplete, and the key technical issues are also tight-lipped. Chen Jingxiong led the team to be self-reliant, thoroughly understood the design principle of missile antenna and developed it by himself. He pioneered the direct solution method of Maxwell equation, which provided a theoretical basis for the successful design of the antenna on the missile and broke the theoretical limitation of the Soviet experts on antenna design.

This has also become one of the models of independent innovation of scientific and technological workers in New China.

Today, Wang Keli, former party secretary of the Second Academy of Aerospace Science and Technology, shared at the symposium that "Academician Chen Jingxiong was the leader when I first joined the work. He patiently told me the electromagnetic wave theory next to the experimental platform and demonstrated the solution of Maxwell’s equation on draft paper, which impressed me all my life."

While developing the "1059" missile, the country also carried out another imitation of the ground-to-air missile code-named "543", which is "Hongqi No.1". However, the problem of missile antenna error has not been solved.

After receiving instructions, Chen Jingxiong came to Xi ‘an 786 factory and began to tackle key problems. About 8 square meters of room, 3 simple tables and chairs. From summer to winter, the experimental team repeatedly tested on the country hills.

After more than half a year, one night in January, 1966, the antenna after "treatment" was tested and the modification scheme of Chen Jingxiong and the research team was confirmed to be completely correct, and the key problems were solved. Chen Jingxiong has solved the problem that has puzzled astronauts for many years, and the performance of domestic antennas exceeds that of foreign antennas of the same type. Since then, "Red Flag No.1" has been equipped to the army, which has strengthened China’s air defense force.

In 1987, Chen Jingxiong won the first prize of national invention because of the key technology of antenna development for surface-to-air missile guidance stations such as "Hongqi No.1".

Zhongshan, an academician of China Academy of Engineering and an expert in guidance system engineering, is an old colleague of Chen Jingxiong. At the symposium, he said excitedly, "As an old comrade-in-arms and old friend of Academician Chen, I respect him very much." With Academician Chen as the leader, he formed a team capable of recruiting good fighters, developed high-tech achievements under difficult conditions, and made indelible contributions to China’s national defense modernization.

Be the same as the party, spread sparks with the party and cultivate new people.

Chen Jingxiong, born in 1921, is the same as the party and is also United with the party. While constantly exploring the cause of national defense science and technology, he also actively moved closer to the party organization.

In 1954, Chen Jingxiong submitted his application for joining the Party to the Party organization for the first time. He wrote: "The reason why the old society was poor and backward and bullied by others was that science and technology were too backward. All material civilizations, including airplanes and cannons, were made by technology. If China wants to become rich and strong, it must be based on developed science and technology."

In the next 25 years, he kept strict demands on himself by the standards of Communist party member, persisted in the belief of saving the country through science and technology, and strengthened his initial intention of serving the country through science and technology.

In 1979, the Party branch approved Chen Jingxiong’s application to join the Party and agreed to admit him to prepare for party member. The road to joining the party, which runs long distance with scientific research, ushered in the dawn.

The resolution of the branch meeting reads: "I hope Comrade Chen Jingxiong will go deep into the front line after joining the party and make more contributions with his technical expertise." In the scientific research work since then, Chen Jingxiong has never broken his word. He went deep into the front line, trained talents, and constantly spread the spark of science and technology for the development of the aerospace industry.

It is Chen Jingxiong’s long-cherished wish to let young people make faster progress and hold up the banner of the space industry from generation to generation. In order to meet the needs of talent echelon construction, he organized the aerospace system to train graduate students independently, and taught in Peking University, Tsinghua, Beihang University and other universities successively.

When teaching "Electromagnetic Wave Theory" to Beihang University students, Chen Jingxiong began to write "Electromagnetic Wave Theory" and shared his years of research experience because there were no ready-made textbooks available.

Xie Lianggui, executive deputy director of Science and Technology Committee of China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation, said that Academician Chen Jingxiong was his teacher, and the topic of his graduate thesis was decided by Mr. Chen. The rigorous scientific style is Xie Lianggui’s deepest memory of Chen Jingxiong. "Mr. Chen asked me to translate the theory into English and deduce the formula. When he was in his seventies, he pushed such a complicated formula from beginning to end. "

The annual salary is always on fire, and the scientific spirit lasts forever.

This morning, many experts from China Academy of Engineering, China Institute of Electronics, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Peking University, China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation and China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation attended the forum. Everyone said that we should follow the example of the older generation of astronauts such as Academician Chen Jingxiong, inherit the scientific spirit, be brave in overcoming difficulties and obstacles, climb the peak of space science and technology, and contribute wisdom and strength to building a space power.

"I witnessed the first 100 years of the party this year, and I will continue to watch the development of the motherland and the aerospace industry in the future." (End)
